Gyromitra sensu lato forms a monophyletic group within the Discinaceae composed of five distinct subgenera and 11 well supported clades that include Discina, Hydnotrya and Pseudorhizina.”13

Medium to large, cup-, saddle- to brain-shaped fungi with a cap and stalk, fertile surface some shade of brown. Microscopic characters include: operculate asci, and cyanophilic spores with large, apiculate outgrowths. See, e.g., Arora1, Beug4, MycoKey15.
