Remarks (internal) : No accepted type specimen exists for this species, at present. Fries (1821) accepted the name, thus, giving it priority according to the current ICBN. Until a suitable collection from the type locality has been designated as a neotype, the above described collection (TENN no. 41502) can be used to determine the concept of the taxon studied in this paper. Batsch (1789) first described this species as having pilei that were stipitate, expanded frequently lobed and scrobiculate, pitted at the disc, subsilky, pruinose at margin and cadmium yellow or flesh colored. The stipes were subventricose to fusiform, radicating, concrescent, confluent, scaly, elongate and flexible, cadmium yellow or tawny above to blackish fuscus below. The context is zonate, cadmium yellow to whitish fuscus above and blackish fuscus below. The spines are short and sparse. This species was placed by Karsten (1879) into Hvdnellum. Coker and Beers (1951), Maas Geesteranus (1972), Harrison (personal communication), and Baird (1984) agree with Karsten’s name change.

Macromorphology (mihi): Sporophore: pileus up to 5.0 cm broad, plane to depressed, highly colliculose, pileoli present, radially rugose, margin irregular, tomentose becoming matted, glabrous in age, white (5A1), light orange (5A5), madeira (8E5) to reddish orange (7B7) or blackening when bruised; context duplex, zonate, whitish (5A1) to light orange (5A5). Stipe: up to 4.5 × 1.7 cm, central, terete to attenuate below to a bulbous base, tomentose becoming matted, concolorous with the pileus; context duplex, zonate, concolorous with pileus flesh. Spines: up to 5.0 mm long, decurrent, crowded, white (5A1) to madeira (8E5). Chemical reactions: preserved context tissue dark brown to black in KOH or NH4OH Micromorphology (mihi): Pileus trama hyphae: up to 3.0 µm diam., uninflated, interwoven in subsurface layer, parallel below, unclamped; gloeoplerous-like hyphae present. Stipe hyphae: up to 4.0 µm diam., uninflated, interwoven in subsurface layer, parallel below, unclamped gloeoplerous-like hyphae present. Spine trama hyphae: up to 5.0 µm diam., unclamped. Basidia: (n=20) 31.0-43.5 × 6.0-7.0 µm (X= 38.95 " 4.38 × 6.4 " 0.23 µm), clavate, unclamped, 4-spored; sterigmata (n=10) up to 5.5 µm long (X= 4.82 " 0.51 pm).
