Cap: 2–7 cm wide, conic when young, becoming convex to plane with an umbo in age; surface moist or day, smooth, not viscid, bright red when young, fading to orange-red in age, not fibrillose-scurfy when dry; flesh thin, fragile, red to reddish-orange, odor and taste mild.

Gills: adnate, close to subdistant, broad, waxy, yellowish, red-orange to creamy pale orange.

Stipe: 2–8 cm long, 2–10 mm thick, equal, hollow, sometimes flattened, dry, smooth, yellow-orange to orange-red, paler yellow downward and often coated with white mycelium on the base.
