General Description:

Pine Cone Fungus

Cap Off centered on stalk, top surface light at first then dark brown, fuzzy or fibrous. Hymeneal layer (underside of cap) covered with teeth like projections, margin also fuzzy or uneven.

Stalk brown, same color as cap surface, also fuzzy, attached to margin of cap instead of center.

It may be helpful to note if it is growing on a buried pine or Douglas-fir cone

Diagnostic Description:

There may be more then one species here but that is yet to be determined.


Europe, North and Central America, Asia. and possibly els were,


found on Douglas-fir cones, and pine cones,

Look Alikes:

(it is yet to be determined if there is any)


no know uses other then to break down conifer cones.


Being that these some times grow on pine cones and some times on Douglas-fir cones there may be more then one species.
