General Description:

Cap 3-10 cm wide, purplish-pallid brown or gray, some what zoned,green with KOH
Stalk 3-8 cm tall, 1.5-2 cm thick, pallid white
Gills pale white, latex staining them purple then brown
Spore print pale yellowish or white
Latex white staining flesh and gills lilac-purple then brown, not yellow
Taste mild or sometimes acrid


Habitat:

Deciduous trees


Look Alikes:

Lactarius uvidus var. montanus with zones, darker purple and may have hairs on cap margin
Lactarius uvidus var. uvidus no zones
Lactarius palescens found under conifers, cap paler, cap & stalk viscid
Lactarius californicus may have yellow colors
Lactarius cascadensis darker gills, found in swampy areas
Lactarius maculatus cap zones more prominent, taste mild
Lactarius subpalustris bigger, darker brown, and not staining green in KOH, most of these lookalikes do stain with KOH applied to the cap surface.
Other similar purple Lactarius species have yellow latex
