Description : PHELLINUS ROBINEAE (Murr.) A. Ames, Ann. Mycol. 11(3):246. 1913. Pyropolyporus robineae Murr., Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 30:114. 1903. Fomes robineae (Murr.) Sacc. et D. Sacc., Syll. Fung. 17:117. 1905.

Basidiocarps perennial, sessile, applanate to ungulate, up to 30 cm wide; upper surface at first yellowish brown, finely tomentose, azonate, with age becoming black, deeply rimose, often appearing scaly, glabrous; margin at first yellowish brown, finely tomentose, in older specimens concolorous with the blackened, rimose upper surface, pore surface yellowish to reddish brown, the pores circular, 7-8 per mm, with thick, entire dissepiments; context tissue light reddish brown, azonate, woody, up to 2.5 cm thick; tube layers concolorous and continuous with the context, distinctly stratified, woody, each layer up to 3 mm thick.
Contextual hyphae brown in KOH solution, thin- to thick-walled, with rare branching, simple-septate, 2.5-5.5 µm in diam; tramal hyphae similar, 2.5-3.5 µm in diam.

Setae or other sterile hymenial structures lacking. Basidia broadly clavate, 4-sterigmate, 10-12 × 5.5-6 µm. Basidiospores ovoid to subglobose, appearing flattened on one side, reddish-brown, smooth, negative in Melzer’s reagent, 5-6 × 4.5-5 µm. Type of rot – White rot of heartwood of living black locust.
Cultural characteristics – See Campbell (1938) and Nobles (1948, 1958, 1965).
Substrata – Robinia neomexicana, Robinia pseudoacacia. Distribution – AZ, CA, ID, NM.

Voucher specimens – RLG 7049; ERC 71-42 (ARIZ).

Remarks – Phellinus robineae is apparently present in the Southwest wherever Robinia neomexicana grows. Basidiocarps of P. robineae are similar to those of Phellinus badius but have smaller pores and tend to be more applanate than those of P. badius.

Description : Fomes robiniae (Murr.) Sacc. & D. Sacc. (Pl. IV & Pl. IX, 27) Key Pattern: 1 2 1 2 6 2 2 2 3 2 1

GROWTH CHARACTERS.-Growth slow, 1.5 cm. in 1 week. Advancing zone hyaline to white, even, raised. Mat white in the margin, `honey yellow’ to `apricot yellow’ beyond which changes to `antimony yellow’, `citron yellow’ to `chamois’ to `honey yellow’, cottony to loose-cottony, felty, appressed near the advancing region. Reverse `sayal brown’ to ‘mikado brown’.

Odour none.

Tests for extracellular oxidase positive; on gallic and tannic acid agars, diffusion zones weak to moderately strong, growth 1.5 cm on both, guaiacum reaction strong.

HYPHAL CHARACTERS.-Advancing zone: hyphae hyaline, thin-walled, branched, simple septate, 2.3-3.0 µm diameter. Aerial mycelium: (a) hyphae as in advancing zone, yellowish brown thin to slightly thick-walled, 3.0-4.6 µm diameter; (b) fibre hyphae thick-walled, yellowish brown, unbranched, aseptate, 1.5-2.0 µm diameter; © hyphal swellings present on slightly thick-walled hyphae. Submerged mycelium: hyphae as in advancing zone but much branched.

CULTURES EXAMINED: FRI 87: Context culture, isolated from M 469 on Aglaia roxburghiana Kurz., and FRI 40: Context culture, isolated from 4736 on living Terminalia belerica Roxb., causing white rot.

F. robiniae is distinguished by cottony-woolly, yellow mat.
