Recognized by sight: Tuber rufum var. nitidum was absorbed into T. lyoni several years ago. T. lyoni is noted for the distinctive apical pore or pores, leading into the gleba. However, the problem remains for the truffles without apical pores such as this specimen, which have pink to reddish glebas. I would posit T. rufum would remain as indicative of this species.
