Observation 11258: Xerula Maire

When: 2008-09-17

Collection location: Japan [Click for map]

Who: forestwander

No specimen available

Found this on a hillside with a variety of other mushrooms. The stem was actually longer. I put my hand and most of my wrist into the earth, but failed to nab the full length of this one. I didn’t realize stems like this even existed. What a day!

Recognized by sight: white gills, looooooong rooting stipe and nipple-tipped cap all fit. here in america we have contests as to who can dig one of these up in its entirety. not easy to do!!! I once dug down to my armpit after one; luckily it was loose, sandy soil…
