…when I did a bit of online research yesterday to “prove my point”, I ended up proving yours!
The colors in your collection were ambiguous, and the shape atypical, but more important were the gill edges…blunt in formosus, sharp-edged in roseocanus.
And of course, the staining reaction was not apparent in your photos, but as you say, obvious and present in formosus.

I concede the point, but I definitely learned something along the way!

The collection is in sad shape, being old and parasitized by green mold. The gill color is mainly pink and only pinkish orange in one spot on one fruiting body. In photo 22316 you can clearly see the brown scales when you click on ‘Show Full Size’. The staining reaction was consistent for Cantharellus formosus and it is nonexistent in the rainbow chanterelle.

not my concept of formosus.

formosus is slender, with a pinkish cast to the gills. roseocanus is robust, with a rosy cast to the cap.
see this fine site from the PNW that describes our Western chanterelle species. formosus here: http://bcmushrooms.forrex.org/...

and see Darv’s posting of C.cibarius roseocanus on this website:

didn’t you mean to call it a rainbow chanterelle, Darv?

…looks just like the ones that you’ve showed me from SP…hymenium darker than cap, cap covered in a pinkish bloom, sweet apricot smell (I assume).
