Observation 11809: Tylopilus P. Karst.

When: 2008-09-29

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

Notes:
This bolete has grey pores and a grey cap, and a cream stipe with fine brown stippling (glandular dots?) except near the base.

The startling thing being the area of whitish gill-like structure between the stem and the pores.

Shows signs of bruising blue, then black.

Found in moss beneath pine.

Used references: Keys out to Tylopilus at MushroomExpert.com, but no farther. Pore surface (including the odd area near the stem and the color changes) matches T. sordidus but the cap surface of the observed mushroom isn’t cracked, and generally doesn’t look like T. sordidus
