Who: Debbie Drechsler (debdrex)

No specimen available

Fruiting in the duff of a redwood along a back alley. Rather old by the time I found it, so no spore print. It does appear to show signs of the red/orange staining of the stipe that is characteristic of this mushroom.
11/2/08: I’ve added a photo and a drawing of a second fruiting which I caught, this time before the maggots did! I’m still not clear on how to differentiate between C. rachodes and C. brunneum but I just know someone’s gonna tell me if I’m wrong! The pileus was 5.3cm across, stipe 1.2cm at apex and the whole thing was 14.4cm tall.

Here is a link to Else’s paper which helps to differentiate C. brunneum from C. rachodes:

Another distinct difference noted in the article is the annulus- the annnlus of C. brunneum is simple or unornamented, whereas C. rachodes has a “double veil” so to speak.

brunneum has an abruptly bulbous base, nicely shown in your photo.

Thanks for the info, Deb. This specimen was OLD when found. The stem pulled apart from the base when I dug it up and it was too dry to do any staining at all. So, I’m going to play it safe.

probably the more locally common Chlorophyllum brunneum instead…

need to look at the stipe base.
