Black scaberson stalk, white pores, whitish fibrils on cap where a lawnmower had already turned one upside down and smashed it; or gray-brown with lighter brown highlights where just emerging near a paper birch, which is not a native species in my state.

Used references: Aurora’s Mushroom Demystified. Collected near Paper Birch, which is not native to Oregon. But keys out easily to this species. L. scabrum is known from Oregon.
