When: 2008-10-12

Seen at: Bavaria, Germany [Click for map]

Who: AL'S (Sig)

No specimen available

It was growing in Clustered(From what i have seen from the lady)The Cap Seems to be Carmel Tan Bruising Blue(2to5cm)Stem is highly Blue With a slight Veil(8cmLong).Gills are Tan-Gray Warm ,Growing on the side of Graveled Road on Dried Hay and Grass(3Meters from a Small Lake)..

Lady had these Mushrooms (She must of had a Bag full of them cover in news paper) She called them Psilocybe arcana (but i thought Psilocybe azurescens). They where already blue when shown to me, She told me where she had found them, but they where all gone. So i did not have a good chance to take Photo’s from it’s natural Habitat(since they are all gone) .She was kind enough to let me take Photo’s of them .

Recognized by sight: The blue on the stem and cap is not characteristic of psilocin oxidation. The slimy cap is another feature that distinguishes the blue-green Stropharia from active Psilocybes.

stamets talks about this species at length in “Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World”…

…not active, not poisonous, either. Its “poisonous” reputation may be due to it having been considered a hallucinagen at one time. Stamets also claims that it is eaten as an edible in Europe! If the pickers of this pretty shroom thought that they were getting an active species, their only harm will be severe disappointment.

I agree

These mushrooms don’t bruise blue, they just are blue. If the lady thought she was picking magic mushrooms, she got the wrong ones. These are not too toxic but are not common edibles either and shouldn’t really be eaten.

if it’s any consolation, they used to be Psilocybe aeruginosa…just not active psilocybes.

never heard of P. arcana. S. aeruginosa starts blue-green and fades to tan. They are stunning when young.

I was told the Caps where Tan at first

In my opinion Paul’s comment was out of line and will be removed. I see nothing wrong with the observation you made and appreciate your time and willingness to share what you’ve seen.

We have recently identified a problem with our current server setup where a large number of image operations (uploads or downloads) can prevent other users from accessing pages. However, we have not decided on how to approach this. I am hoping it will not be necessary to ask our users to limit what they provide to the site.

If the lady had not picked all of them ,I would of found them myself(hopefully they grow back so i can take proper Photos, they where growing in obvious place and she was with a group(10)and was the Species they were looking for .
they were looking for mushrooms to eat and( i was looking for ones to take photos of ).i was in the right Place but Wrong Time ,that is the way i see as, but got lucky Chance to take Photos of them before my Batteries died on me . I thought they are Psilocybe azurescens , so from your message i guess i was wrong and it is Psilocybe arcana . Just to remind you i am a newbie and did not know their is rules to finding Mushrooms and learning from others inputs .If there is Rules Please send them to me
Kind Regards
