Observation 12404: Melanophyllum haematospermum (Bull.) Kreisel

When: 2008-10-12

Collection location: Strouds Run State Park, Athens, Ohio, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dan Molter (shroomydan)

No specimen available

Suspecting it was just another unidentifiable LBM, I almost passed by these little guys without stopping for a closer look, but curiosity prompted me to pluck one from the pine log they were growing on. I’m glad I did. The red gills and granular partial veil are distinctive.

I have found this once in 30 years. Mine was on an old bail of hay along a road in a boggy forest. Good find!
