This is one mushrooms whose odor nearly completely identifies it. It has a rather old shrimp-like odor, and is often referred to as either the Seafood Russula or Shrimp Russula locally. It is edible and fairly good when very young. These specimens alas were somewhat older. Identification by Dr. Lorelei Norvell, assisted by Dr. Judy Rogers.
