Observation 12808: Cortinarius (Pers.) Gray

When: 2008-10-17

Collection location: Larch Mountain, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]

Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)

No specimen available

I was prepared to call this a Lepista nuda or close relative, until I saw the photos which shows either a cobweb or a remnant of a cortina, and the base of the stipe still has cottony remnants of a cortina, so is probably Cortinarius.

Recognized by sight: dude, where’s my rusty brown spore drop on this mature mushroom? could the “cobwebs” be mycelia or, gosh, cobwebs? or mold? what did it smell like? I think that your first impression was the correct one.
