This charcoal-colored lichen was attached quite firmly to the basalt at Vista House, and I was barely able to get this picture with my arms extended and a 10x zoom lens.

Used references: Vitt, Marsh & Bovey’s Mosses, Lichens and Ferns of Northwest North America; Brodo. Universally all sources agree this lichen is found only on seashore rocks. This observation was taken nearly 100 miles inland, but just above the Columbia River near where tidewater reaches, and at an elevation of close to 1,000 feet. Pretty high waves, huh?
