This may be an aged instance of that same brown, fibrous trich with white gills that stain brown with age.

I saw duff mounds under jack pine, and dug this up out of one of them. The first photo shows the result. The second is one of the duff mounds, undisturbed. One of the characteristic V-shaped fascicles of jack pine can be seen atop the brownish, almost-completely-concealed mushroom.
