It’s definitely rather clear that he thinks our taxon is G. annulare, but it is completely unclear WHY he thinks that. I did not see any sequenced types.

G. annulare seems correct to me.

Dr. Josef Vlasák of the Czech Republic has sequenced and microscopically examined Ganoderma from California. His web site is rather clear on the ID of this Ganoderma from Bay trees. Look below for my post Created: 2013-03-30 for a link to his site. Is there more data than this somewhere?

Here is what it said under the G. annularis photo..
“Context thin, pileus crust sometimes very thick. California, often on Umbellularia but also in South America. G. brownii with yellow pores and not so thin context should occur in the same region but none could be found after sequencing all specimens in collection with big differences in pore colour and context thickness. Therefore, we regard G. brownii a synonym of G. annularis.”
So is he saying what we have been calling G. brownii really G. annularis?….and G. annularis has precedence???

Almost every book has a different take on this critter.
Dr. Vlasák has sequenced many of them from Calif on bay and they match G. annularis, not G. brownii.
That includes some that have yellow pores! (He has a photo)
Take a look at his photos and read the text under them.

but here is what Michael Kuo says in his Mushroom Expert site…
“Ganoderma annularis, found on hardwoods in California, has tubes that do not develop in new layers each year, and extremely thin flesh; its spores measure 10-12 × 6-8 µ. Ganoderma brownii, also found on California hardwoods, has layered tubes and spores 9-12 × 7-9 µ”.
Does the “extremely thin flesh” mean these may then be G. brownii?

Gilbertson also thought it was a different species.

I.F. has Fomes annularis as Lloyd species and has the current name as Ganoderma australe. Looking at the photos of that species here, these two are obviously different species.
