I thought that this was Ustilina deusta, but now am unsure. Crustose blackish something (maybe not a fungus?) growing from bark of old Bigleaf maple snag.

Used references: With the exception of size, this matches the description of U. deusta in Audubon Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, p. 375, exactly. It really does look like charcoal, but is on the outside of the bark layer.
