Observation 13351: Tricholoma focale (Fr.) Ricken

When: 2008-11-01

Collection location: Cape Lookout State Park, Tillamook Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]

Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)

No specimen available

Notes:
Tricholoma. Can’t key to genus, but brought one specimen home with me for drying if anyone wants to take a closer look. I thought T. pardinum at first, but this doesn’t look at all like Lincoff’s picture in Audubon Society Field Guide. Too large, too scaley, too many scales on stipe. Out-if-focus base of stipe photo shows brownish-yellow discolorations around numerous maggot holes. Pretty, but the odor was off-putting – similar to green corn. And now that I’ve found many of the dark reddish-brown Tricholomas are poisonous, I’m just as happy to contribute it to science.
