Russula little maroon
Scattered in soil under hemlock, oak, beech, and birch off Quiet Walkway west of
Sugarlands visitor center, GSMNP
Pileus: 18-40 mm, 10D5, 10F8, 9C3, 11E5, 11B3, 9B2, convex to applanate; smooth,
shiny, widely shallowly depressed; margin crenate to even, tuberculate striate with
crenulations, straight to slightly decurved; context white, thin, pillowy; smells like
vanilla, taste immediately bitter suddenly acrid; KOH burns pigment turns orange; SP most likely Q based on gill color
Lamellae: attached, close, cream to yellow-cream, no forking, marginate at margin
(cuticle material), broad, thin, dry; guaiac +
Stipe: 2-4 cm x 5-10 mm; white with purple-pink flush, central, curved, smooth with
minute striations; context all hollow, white; FeSO4 pink surface and context, guaiac +,
Spores: measured on gill, (8.4-)7.8-7.5-7.2 × (6.9-)6.6-6.3-6.0(-5.8) µm, Q=(1.28-)1.25-1.2-1.15(-1.09), globose to subglobose, amyloid plage, blunt amyloid warts often with ridged connections, (1.2-)1.1-0.9-0.7(-0.5) µm
Cystidia: scattered, (50-)48-43-38(-34) × (13.0-)11.5-10.2-8.8(-7.9) µm, strongly SV +, cylindrical, filled with contents, apex ocassionally with pore/tear opening or mucronate or capitate, occasionally spewing contents out of pore/tear
Pileipellis: orthochromatic in cresyl blue, subpellis not well differentiated, ixoderm of interwoven septate hyphae, ~180 µm; dermatocystidia strongly SV +, cylindrical, multi-septate, 4-6 µm wide
