Unless it has an obvious yellowing latex, I see no reason to add “var. betulae” to american finds of Lactarius pubescens either.

was originally published by Smith, based on yellowing latex and small spores. It was later reduced by Hesler to a variety of pubescens.
I don’t think the name betulae would have been used by Smith if he had known from the beginning about Lactarius pubescens and that it was growing with Betula.
