There is a version of H. hypothejus the grows around Mendocino, that is very variable, and worse, the colors change dramatically as it grows. Starts with a flat grey-brown cap and light yellow gills, and ends up orange-brown with a dark disc, and yellow to orange gills. Sometimes it develops red in the cap also. A fairly annoying mushroom to id with all the color changes.

It should have a glutenous veil that might only see as a pale translucent ring at the top of the stipe.
