Recognized by sight: large, very hard/woody fallen fruitbody. Blackish top, dull reddish spines, interior context rather bright red. Near Abies concolor. Not photographed, but the fruitbody is right along the trail near a large pile of rotting wood above the golf course, would be easily refound.

but it should be looked for in Sequoia and King’s Canyon NP
