Collection location: Sewanee, Franklin Co., Tennessee, USA [Click for map]

Who: Chris Parrish (kitparrish)

No specimen available

Location: 35°13’2.20"N, 85°55’18.04"W, el. 544 m. Running Knob Hollow.

Substrate and habitat: Plants were on the shoulder of a large boulder near a stream bed on the steep western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau. The habitat is rich cove hardwood forest with Liriodendron and many other tall southern hardwoods.

A few white rhizines can be seen under curled thallus margins. It would be interesting to have a photo of the thallus undersides as some Peltigera are strongly patterned below.

The first three photos of the plants in situ were taken on 05 dec 2008. The rest are of plants found on a different boulder about 100 m from the first site, and were taken on 07 feb 2009.

These characters seem to fit Peltigera praetextata pretty well, but Brodo, p.518-519, mentions that P. praetextata shows a “thin tomentum near the lobe tips,” so we will have to look into that …
