check out the photos of other collections of this mushroom on MO. and don’t feel bad about the misidentification…the first time I saw one in the Bay Area, over 8 years ago, I tried to make it into a velosa, too!

I will check them out. Thanks I thought the color of the cap was a little off too.

I think there’s a ring on the stipe…

…and a a large thin patch of volva on the cap. Perhaps, Amanita calyptratoides might be a more likely bet than A. velosa. An available microscope would clarify things quickly due to the difference in spore shape.
