Looks like an outer skin has peeled, revealing a pimpled inner skin. Interior composed of spore dust. Globose spores with diameter 5<d<7.

My one photo seems to show the mouths of tubes beneath the inner pimply skin. Spore shape matches.

I didn’t examine this very closely. By the time I got it home the compartment in the plastic container was full of grayish-brown spore dust. The thing seemed to have devolved into a total mess, so I just tossed it.

I was quite puzzled by this. “Puffball” was the only thing that seemed sensible. Learned something new on account of this mid-January stroll through the woods.
