Recognized by sight: Cap smooth, glabrous, moist but not viscid; approx. 3.5-10 cm wide; lacking an annulus; spore deposit cinnamon;flesh tastes bitter; growing on burned pine logs.
Used references: Hessler’s North American Species of Gymnopilus
Based on microscopic features: Spores broadly elliptic to subfusoid, smooth to very finely roughened, lacking an apical pore, plage not evident, 8-12 × 5-6.5 micrometers, dextrinoid in Melzer’s, ochre in water or KOH mounts, moderately thick walled.No clamp connections observed.
Based on chemical features: Pileipellis turns black w/application of KOH
