Observation 159615: Mycetinis copelandii (Peck) A.W. Wilson and Desjardin

When: 2014-02-12

Collection location: Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Shane Marsh (Mushane)

No specimen available

They smelled like burning plastic, black pepper, and tar!
I leaned down on the ground to take a picture and almost threw up, I had no clue what could possibly be making that stink. Then I smelled the mushrooms and got really nauseated. Ugh!!!!

Having asked various people to describe the smell of these, one person said “Burnt Garlic!”
That pretty much sums it up, though I get hints of the other smells I described as well.
It’s a very intense and potent odor that can be smelled from many feet away.

Growing under either Lithocarpus densiflorus, Sequoia sempervirens, or Arbutus menziesii. All 3 were present.
