Having examined spores from similar collections…

and noting reported spore dimensions, it is clear that examination of spores is necessary to confidently distinguish G. korfii from Discina brunnea (Gyromitra brunnea); in at least some cases.

Originally, there were photos of two specimens. The one photo that’s been removed is now seen in a separate post.

Growing a few feet away from a similarly colored specimen that better matches the description of G. korfii.

Folds are more rounded that creased. Probably an example of G. korfii that superficially resembles Discina brunnea (Gyromitra brunnea).
