Observation 165081: Russula variata Banning

Pileus: 7-11.5cm, 3D4-5, 3C3, 7B2-3, 8B2, 8D3, with scales 3E8 or 3F3 or 8D3, convex to infundibuliform, broadly depressed and acutely depressed in center as well, areolate with patches up to 3 mm radiating from and concentrated in center, patches rarely proceed to margin, some bite marks, some yellow spots, patches rough, smooth elsewhere, cushiony, radiating wrinkles often protruding from end of scale zone to margin; margin even, straight to decurved, tanslucent striate (occasional) only at 3mm to margin to margin; context white, thick, firm; odor none, taste sour at first becoming very acrid after a minute; SP B to C
Lamellae: adnate to subdecurrent, cream, close, narrow, forking abundant throughout, soapy, not breaking easily; guaiac ++
Stipe: 45-77 mm x 15-26mm, concolorous with gills, smooth with grooves, some browning at base, equal or slightly enlarged towards base; context cream solid with large chambers, firm; FeSO4 neg surface, greenish on context
