Growing in composted Italian spruce-pine sawdust, branch-tips, bark in backyard raspberry patch. This tree was introduced as a seedling Christmas-tree in a pot, with spruce-type foliage. After out-planting, the foliage changed to pine, with 2-3 needles per bundle, forming at the base of each spruce needle.

Gills are dull off-brown to blackish, stipe white, cap variously zoned and colored, as shown.

Gills stain chocolate-black when bruised.
Cap 2.5-3 inches across (6.5-7.5cm).
