Observation 167544: Russula Pers.

When: 2014-06-13

Collection location: Jasper Co., Missouri, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jon Shaffer (watchcat)

No specimen available

Found under oak in a country yard. 5% KOH on cap and flesh negative at first, staining dark brown with time. Can’t quite place the smell. Not foetid or unpleasant but not mushroomy either. Not much taste raw. This looks most like Russula compacta but doesn’t seem to have the right smell.

I chewed on a larger piece for some time. It is mild, even pleasant. Thank you Igor! Jon

has a stipe concolorous with the cap. It should also be odorless and have an acrid taste. Sometimes you need to chew on the cap a bit longer to get an accurate interpretation of the taste.
