Recognized by sight: There are several on-line examples of Thelephora vialis that match this. Since Arora says “Other species: T. vialis of eastern North America is more variable in olor and has smaller spores.” I believe North Carolina qualifies as “eastern”.

material might be Thelephora vialis. I have not seen photos of that species, so cannot say.
