Three or four of these mushrooms were found in two separate locations in mixed hardwood forest dominated by red and white oak, and sugar maple; other trees in the vicinity include hornbeam, hophornbeam, elm spp, paperbark birch.

Mushrooms with a very foul coal tar odor. Overall, mushroom cap tops cream-white with blush of pink; gills sulfur to chrome yellow tone; stems with sulfur to chrome yellow tone and pink blush but very noticeable purple color at base of stem. The photos show the purple color; the photo with white background best shows the yellow color.

I’m sure they are Tricholoma. Have seen sulphureum with that kind of gill attachment. They look most like what has been called T. bufonium until an Italian paper cast serious doubt on the idea that it is genetically different from T. sulphureum. The latter may be your best bet for now. Seems very early for these things. I would be shocked to find them in my vicinity in June.

I encountered more of these in several locations today in Washington Co., WI, separated by about 20-30 miles. Gills appear somewhat decurrent in some specimens but not all.

I know what you mean on the gills and no I’m not certain what it is. Got other ideas?

Are you sure these are Tricholoma?
