like odor (yuck, who wants to smell this?), peridium color (kind of odd here, isn’t it?), potential hosts (including herbaceous plants like rock rose), color changes, staining (turned my hands, uh, brown), etc. Anything that helps you identify this as something other than what you would normally find.
Such as: “Found in 5-gallon planter with Pinus seedling, staining black when sliced, but with white papery peridium.”

Keep in mind this is a small fruiting body… ~2cm dia. with ~2mm peridioles.
peridioles. Did you get or can you get measurements, Jacob? I’ve never seen such big ’uns.
