Observation 168933: Russula Pers.

When: 2014-07-02

Collection location: Hunlock Creek, Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

Specimen available

I think this may be an atypically colored example of R. mariae. I have often detected a fairly distinct odor in R. mariae… difficult to pin down… not quite fishy, pleasant, a bit oily. This one exhibited the same odor. Gills showing some forking not very far from the stipe.

Growing solitary in the same spot where I have collected a very similar Russula during other summers. For example obs 138811

Near an apple tree and a Shagbark Hickory tree, in a grassy area.

Note the interveined gills. This trait is a also seen on obs 138811
