Observation 175088: Hygrophorus Fr.

When: 2014-08-23

Collection location: Perry, Maine, USA [Click for map]

Who: Terri Clements/Donna Fulton (pinonbistro)

No specimen available

Notes:
Growing in middle of mossy pathway—mixed woods. Cap brown, dry, 8 cm. Decurrent pinkish buff gills. Stem paler color of cap, tapered. White context—unchanging. Unpleasant odor and taste. White spore deposit.

Note: the cap did not have a waxy or tacky feel—more like kid leather. Having never found Hygrophorous I have no idea whether this is typical but from what I’ve read about the genus most of its species have caps that are viscid or slimy when fresh.
