I suspect this is the same species as obs 174855 . This earlier obs was during a dry spell. So I think 174855 had not developed normally.

These spiny Lycoperdon types seem very confusing. Some reports say that the surface of the spore case on echinatum should be netted. Others say it could be smooth. Openings appear on these types apically… and otherwise. I wonder if insects play a role?
