Fomes fomentarius (Fr.)Kickx. Polyporaceae, Aphyllophorales. (Tinder Polypore or Трутовик настоящий лиственный.)
Cap: 8-25cm wide, convex as asymmetrical wide cone or somewhat hoof-shaped, sometimes upper part looks as a knob attached into a wood; a cap consists of thick dull gray minor brown overlapped layers with additional thin concentric coloring, almost smooth or somewhat fine velvety with dull gray crust.
Flesh: 0.5-3cm thick, yellowish-brown up to brownish-gray.
Tubes 0.4-4cm long, several per 1mm, bottom cap surface looks fine velvety, almost white (when soft) then light yellow, greenish-yellow up to yellowish-brown;
Stalk: absent (lateral fixation edge).
Habitat: single or small group at the old partially rotten birch (rarely at aspen) stumps or trunks minor on living trees. It grows several yeas (up to more ten).
Edibility: stiff as a wood.
Season: All year-round.
