Recognized by sight: Clearly an earth star. The dark sack seems and thick peridium (outer layer) seem similar to G. minus from Fungi of Japan (apparently a synonym of G. quadrifium). However, the photo in Fungi of Japan does not suggest the love stalk lifing up the sack.

Used references: Seems similar to the image of this species from Fungi of Japan (listed as G. minus), but that photo does not suggest the clear stalk supporting the sack.

Recognized by sight: Geastrum quadrifidum does not have a delineated sulcate peristome. Pectinatum is also the only one I can think of with such a long narrow pedicel.
