Observation 18459: Hydnochaete olivacea (Schwein.) Banker

When: 2009-02-14

Collection location: Strouds Run State Park, Athens, Ohio, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dan Molter (shroomydan)

No specimen available

Another unattractive fungus. I’ve walked by this same stick three or four times this season, and I even picked it up once and decided it was too ugly to warrant a photograph. But yesterday, I decided to snap a few shots to see if this thing could be identified.

The dearth of a species out in the winter makes even the most mundane fungi interesting candidates for photography and identification.

This fungus makes the stick feel dry and fuzzy.
