A very common lichen here a Strouds run, usually found on oak branches. The little black fruit cups are easy to overlook.

Used references: Looking through Brodo’s Lichens of North America it could be P. pumilior (the lumpy look is distinctive) but according to the map in there you’re a bit far north for it to be as common as you say it is. Maybe there are other locally common species not mentioned?
