https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nucleotide/MF954959 is a sequence that matches that type sequence of Hydnum oregonense, from Pacific Rim National Park in BC, Canada.

There are a couple other Hydnum species which look very similar and occur in your area – Hydnum cf. umbilicatum and H. melitosarx – until sequencing or microscopy is done, the best name for this is probably Hydnum sect. Rufescentia, as this encompasses all of the known possibilities.

Thank you, Alan, for your reference, but I doubt you have read that article.

The situation in British Columbia is not so simple that you would be able to label all our Hydnum umbilicatum complex “Hydnum oregonense”. From BC, Niskanen et al. (2018) reports 2 collections of their Hydnum cf. umbilicatum and one collection of each Hydnum melitosarx and Hydnum melleopallidum. None Hydnum oregonense from BC yet.

I would greatly appreciate if you would suggest your identifications (or misidentifications) as Comments and not by overwriting our IDs.
