This was growing in an area where eucalyptus trees had been felled and left rotting, the fungus has a bad smell.

the fungus has been damaged and I have put it on a stick to get a better photograph.

Its very unlikely to be a Lysurus cruciatus this is an introduced species that has only been found in the Hawkes Bay once.
