Identified based on the descriptions in Mushroom Demystified by David Arora. This specimen was brought in for display at the Santa Cruz Fungus Fair by a member of the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz.
Switched to M. rufobrunnea at Darvin’s suggestion. Now that I’m aware of this species I agree that it’s the better name to apply.
