Not sure what the second part of your comment means, but I guess I don’t need to know. :-)
I searched GenBank for the name Boletus quercinus and got 23 records, of which all but two are some kind of polypore. Importantly, however, this one is from Japan, and contains both the full-length ITS and the first 628 bps of nrLSU: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/AB973737.1. A BLAST of this ITS sequence gives very close (>99%) hits with Caloboletus guanyui. So looks like the latter taxon is indeed found in Japan, and this fact lends more credence to its conspecificity with Hongo’s morphologically similar B. quercinus.

Yes, it IS a pity we are still lacking a sequenced genome of Hongo’s bolete, but it appears (so to say) to be quite rare locally, even here in Shiga or Kyoto, where I guess everyone is busy with his own needles :)

…for posting the second and improved description of quercinus by Hongo & Nagasawa.
What can I say… Comparison of this one with that of Chai et al. for guanyui left me with an ambivalent feeling. Yes, the descriptions are very similar, suggesting the two entities are conspecific, but at the same time some of the finer distinctions, including the ecology and geography, perhaps should not be ignored. Morphological descriptions always have their limitations, particularly for those who don’t have a first-hand experience with the organisms, pictures are worth a thousand words, and DNA is usually definitive in sorting things out at the species level. Like I said, it would be nice to have Hongo’s collections sequenced (if it hasn’t been done yet). Alternatively, a trip to the locus tipicus or one of the other indicated collecting sites in Japan in search of the bolete fitting Hongo’s description makes some sense. The question is whether lxjfx is up to traveling this far in search of a needle in a haystack! :-)

Chapeau 4,5-14 cm, dur et convexe avec la marge incurvée dans la jeunesse, puis plan-convexe et mou, parfois irrégulier avec l’âge; Revêtement finement tomenteux, velouté ou presque glabre, souvent aréolé au disque, sec mais, avec l’âge. légèrement visqueux par l’humidité, de couleur entièrement chamois à miel, chamois-olivacé, chamois-ochracé en séchant, devenant plus sombre au frottement. Chair du chapeau blanchâtre, virant faiblement au bleu verdâtre à la coupe. Chair du pied ferme, légèrement jaunâtre, parfois rougeâtre à la base, bleuissant faiblement à la coupe comme dans le chapeau. Saveur douce, odeur fongique nette. Tubes adnés ou déprimés autour du stipe, jaunâtre puis jaunâtre sale, virant rapidement au bleu-verdâtre à l’air, Jusqu’à 12 mm de long. Whether Hongo’s quercinus is really conspecific with the Chinese collections should ideally be investigated by sequencing the type collection.
Did you taste your bolete, and if so, was it bitter? What about the spore dimensions — do they fit Hongo’s measurements?
Maybe at this time the best name is Boletaceae, as I am not really confident about either of my generic proposals.

Thank you for pointing this out. I don’t really know anything about the boletes of Japan, and B. quercinus is no exception in that regard.
In the past, I had a number of boletes collected by lxjfx sequenced and most of these produced sequences that did not match anything in GenBank. I would consider to have the present collection sequenced, too, except that given its age, and not knowing how it was stored over the years, I am a bit skeptical that it would deliver a positive result.
I didn’t really find much online about Hongo’s B. quercinus and couldn’t get access to the original description and/or photographs. The only useful references I came across are:

According to the first reference, showing a painting of a heavily reticulated bolete, this name is illegitimate because the epithet had already been preoccupied (Boletus quercinus Schrad. 1794). It also suggests that Hongo’s bolete could belong in Rubroboletus, which makes some sense. However, the other 3 references show a bolete identified as B. quercinus with a smooth stipe. These latter exemplars could be Caloboletus guanyui.

Description of guanyui in Chai et al.:
“Basidiomata medium-sized to large. Pileus 5–10 cm in diameter, convex to applanate; surface dry, finely tomentose, dirty white to pale brown; context 0.5–1.8 cm thick in the center of the pileus, white, changing bluish quickly when injured, then back to white. Hymenophore poroid, depressed around apex of stipe; pores subround, 0.3–0.5 mm in diameter, reddish to reddish brown when young, then yellow or yellowish brown, changing bluish black when injured; tubes about 0.5–1 cm in length, yellowish, changing bluish quickly when injured. Stipe 5.5–9 × 0.7–1.5 cm, central, subcylindric, solid, usually flexuous; surface dry, densely covered with pale brown, brown to reddish brown, minute squamules; context white, sometimes tinged with pale red, unchanging in color when injured; basal mycelium white.
