The new name may be found here…

It’s a pain keeping up with this name game, and using new names exclusively causes confusion for the casual mushroom enthusiast. So I try to tell people both names (when I actually remember the new one) while also mentioning that their field guides will likely use the old one. IMO, the best way to proceed on MO is to allow both names to stand, with the new (presumably correct) name to be listed with higher confidence. A note on the taxonomic change (either in the notes, the addendum to a proposed name, or a comment) is helpful.

Names must be useful

If I can’t find a mushroom name in a key or a text, or if people I am communicating with don’t know what I am talking about (whether it is me trying to learn something, or advising someone else), then the newest name is pretty useless to me. I’ve seen the “I am right and you are wrong” game played much to often to consider it fun any more.

But like I said, to each his own.

Gotta keep up with new names!

I generally prefer names that can be found in published books. Your mileage may differ.
