Observation 21403: Piptoporus betulinus (Bull.) P. Karst.

When: 2009-05-29

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

Found Fomes fomentarius ( http://www.mushroomobserver.org/21401 ), Trichaptum biforme ( http://www.mushroomobserver.org/21402 ), and Piptoporus betulinus on a pair of adjacent Betula papyrifera snags in Zone 07, an open pine wood with a scattering of spruce, balsam fir, birch, and maple and a thick undergrowth of Beaked Hazel (Corylus cornuta). One snag had T. biforme and P. betulinus, the other T. biforme and F. fomentarius.

This observation shows the P. betulinus. Unfortunately the only conks were too high up for me to get good pictures. All I’ve got, basically, is silhouettes.
